I was interesting to hear about all of the current entertainment that is being used for this purpose: Superbook, Meena, Simpsons, soap operas throughout the world, virtual reality math games.
Getting people to enter the alternate reality works for entertainment education.
It could be overwhelming, but it is an exciting opportunity.
I was intrigued when I received anti-bullying curriculum sent out by the US Dept of ED (I think?) and it was in the form of a CD with animated alien looking creatures. I questioned it legitimacy with a colleague who used it. Her response, "The kids loved it." My translation, "Why not use it. Everything else we've tried hasn't made a significant impact." This is a very interesting movement.
ReplyDeleteI think this notion rocks our foundations not only because what school looks like (bricks and mortar buildings-- institutions), but how we do school. Technological innovation is the driver, and the kids are soaking it up like sponges. Did the internet change the way we do school? Does it look the way it did when we went to school?
